How to play Jumble

A Jumble puzzle gives you a few scrambled words to put back in order, and the letters in the marked spaces then spell the answer to a cartoon riddle.

How does a Jumble puzzle work?

Jumble is a word puzzle that appears in many newspapers, and also in books and apps. A puzzle usually has four scrambled words, a cartoon and a short caption with a riddle. Some spaces in each answer are marked, and the letters you write in those spaces are used again at the end.

You play alone, there is no score, and the puzzle is done when you find the final answer. Some players like to time themselves.

How do you solve a Jumble step by step?

  1. Unscramble each of the four words. Each one uses all of its letters and makes one common word.
  2. Write each answer in its spaces, then copy the letters from the marked spaces to one side.
  3. Read the caption under the cartoon: it is the clue to the final answer.
  4. Unscramble the marked letters into the final answer, which is often a pun and can be more than one word. The spaces for it show how many words and letters it has.

What makes the final answer tricky?

The final answer usually plays on words: a phrase that sounds like something else, or a word with a second meaning that fits the cartoon. It may be one word or a short phrase.

Because the marked letters can often form several words, the riddle matters as much as the letters. A phrase that uses every letter and makes the cartoon funny is almost always right.

What are good tips for unscrambling Jumble words?

  • Look for common pairs. TH, CH, SH, ER and ST often belong together, so try them first.
  • Try common endings. -ED, -ER, -ING and -LY at the end of a word can unlock the rest.
  • Move the vowels. Write the consonants in order and slide the vowels between them until a word appears.
  • Say the letters aloud. Sounding out the letters often brings the word to mind faster than staring at them.
  • Solve the easy words first. Each solved word gives you marked letters, and part of the final answer may become clear before you finish.
  • Use the wording of the riddle. The caption often hints at the kind of pun, so think about sounds and double meanings.
  • Count the spaces. The number of words and letters in the final answer narrows the choices a lot.

How can KitPie Words help with Jumble practice?

Use these steps to practise, or to check your work after you have tried a puzzle yourself:

  1. Type one scrambled word into the anagram solver to see the words that use all its letters. Try NRGADE, which can make GARDEN, DANGER or GANDER.
  2. If the anagram solver finds no exact match, open the word unscrambler with the same letters to see shorter words and spot a typing mistake.
  3. For the final answer, type the marked letters into the word unscrambler, as with RUOHES. It lists single words only, so a two-word answer has to be put together from shorter words.
