How to play Boggle

In Boggle, players shake letter cubes into a grid and race a timer to write down words made from letters that touch, then score points for the words nobody else found.

What do you need to play Boggle?

A standard set has 16 letter cubes and a tray that holds them in a grid of 4 by 4, with a lid and a three-minute sand timer. Larger editions use a grid of 5 by 5 or 6 by 6 and change some rules. This guide describes the standard 4 by 4 game.

Each player also needs paper and a pen. Two players can play, more is fine, and everyone plays at the same time.

How does a round of Boggle work?

  1. Shake the covered tray until every cube settles into its own space, then take off the lid.
  2. Start the timer. Every player looks at the same grid and writes down as many words as they can find.
  3. When time runs out, everyone stops writing.
  4. Players read out their lists, cross out shared words and score the rest.

Which words count in Boggle?

  • Each letter of a word must touch the one before it: up, down, sideways or diagonally.
  • A cube can be used only once in the same word, though it can be used again in other words.
  • Words must have at least three letters in the standard game.
  • One cube shows QU, and the pair is always used together.
  • Whether plurals, names and other forms count varies between groups, so agree before you start and pick a dictionary to settle disputes.

How do you score in Boggle?

A word that appears on two or more lists is crossed out for everyone. Each remaining word scores by its length:

Points by word length in the standard game
Word lengthPoints
3 or 4 letters1
5 letters2
6 letters3
7 letters5
8 letters or more11

The QU cube counts as two letters, so a word that uses it has one more letter than the number of cubes it covers. Play several rounds and add up the points; the highest total wins.

What are good Boggle tips?

  • Scan for endings. Look for -S, -ED, -ER and -ING around the grid; they turn short words into longer ones.
  • Look for prefixes. RE-, UN- or DE- next to a short word can give you a second word for free.
  • Start around the rare letters. A K, a W or the QU cube has fewer neighbours that work, so the words there are quick to find or rule out.
  • Find short words first. Three- and four-letter words add up and often lead to longer ones.
  • Extend what you found. Once you have a word, check whether a letter touching its first or last letter makes it longer.
  • Hunt for plurals. If an S touches the end of a word, write the plural too, if your group allows it.
  • Write fast, check later. Get words down while you see them; spelling checks can wait for the end of the round.

How can KitPie Words help you practise Boggle?

KitPie Words works from a set of letters, not a grid: it does not know which letters touch, so check each word on your grid.

  1. Pick 6 to 8 letters that sit close together on your grid, for example one cube and its neighbours, and type them into the word unscrambler. Try T, A, E, R, S and L.
  2. Check which of the listed words you can trace on your grid with touching letters, using each cube once.
  3. After the round, check a disputed word in the word finder by typing it as a pattern, as with RATES.
  4. Practise the short words that score in every round with the three-letter words and the four-letter words.

A full grid of 16 cubes has more letters than the unscrambler takes (15 at most), so type a small group of neighbouring letters, never the whole grid.

Questions about Boggle

Can you play Boggle on paper?

Yes. Draw a grid of 4 by 4 squares, fill it with random letters (include a few vowels), set a three-minute timer and play by the same rules.

How does the QU cube work?

Q and U share one face and are always used together. The pair counts as two letters when you score the word.

What is the shortest word you can score?

Three letters in the standard game. Some larger editions ask for at least four.

What happens when two players find the same word?

It is crossed out on every list that has it, and nobody scores it.

Can KitPie Words solve a Boggle grid?

No. It works from a set of letters and does not know which letters touch, so it cannot read or score a grid. Use it to practise with a few neighbouring letters and to check single words after the round.
