How to unscramble words and play anagrams
To unscramble words, look for short words and common letter groups first, then build longer words around them until you have used the letters you need.
What is an anagram?
An anagram is a word made by rearranging all the letters of another word: LISTEN becomes SILENT, ENLIST or TINSEL. Unscrambling is the wider task of finding any word, long or short, hidden in a set of mixed-up letters.
Anagram puzzles turn up in newspapers, classrooms and party games, and the same skill helps in tile games such as Scrabble and Words With Friends.
How do you play an anagram game?
There are many versions and no single standard. A common party version works like this:
- Pick a set of letters: deal letter cards, draw tiles from a bag, or let one player choose seven to nine letters.
- Write the letters where everyone can see them and start a timer, often two or three minutes.
- Everyone writes down as many words as they can make from those letters.
- When time is up, read the lists aloud and score them.
All you need is paper, pens and a timer. Two players are enough, and larger groups can play in teams.
How do you score an anagram game?
Longer words are worth more, because they are harder to find. A simple house rule is one point per letter, or a fixed score for each length, for example:
| Word length | Points |
|---|---|
| 3 letters | 1 |
| 4 letters | 2 |
| 5 letters | 3 |
| 6 letters | 5 |
| 7 letters or more | 8 |
A word that uses every letter can earn an extra bonus. Agree before you start whether a word found by two players still counts; some groups cross out shared words.
Which words are allowed?
Agree on the rules before the timer starts, because groups differ:
- Plurals such as CATS are usually allowed, though some groups count a plural and its singular as one word.
- Names, abbreviations and words with hyphens are usually not allowed.
- A blank or joker, if you use one, can stand for any letter. In the KitPie Words tools a blank is typed as
?. - Use one dictionary or word list to settle disputes, and choose it in advance.
What are the quickest ways to unscramble letters?
- Find short words first. Two- and three-letter words show which letters fit together, and they often grow into longer words.
- Look for common endings. Try -ED, -ER, -ES, -ING and -LY at the end, and -S for a quick plural.
- Try prefixes. RE-, UN-, IN- and DE- at the start can turn a short word into a long one.
- Place the rare letters first. Q usually needs U, and J, X and Z fit in fewer places, so start with them.
- Write the letters in a circle. A ring of letters breaks the order you first saw and lets new words appear.
- Split vowels and consonants. Put the vowels in one row and the consonants in another, then try consonant, vowel, consonant patterns.
- Say the letters aloud. Hearing pairs such as TH, CH and SH can bring a word to mind faster than reading them.
How can KitPie Words help you unscramble words?
Use these steps to practise, or to check your answers after a round:
- Type your letters into the word unscrambler to see every word they make, grouped by length. Try LISTEN.
- Add
?for a blank, up to 2, as in TRACE?. Each result marks the letter the blank stands for. - For exact anagrams that use every letter, open the anagram solver with the same letters: LISTEN gives SILENT, ENLIST, TINSEL and more.
- Teachers can build an exercise with the word scrambler: paste up to 50 words, such as these three, and print the puzzle with its answer key.
Every tool searches 173,444 words and takes up to 15 letters at a time.

Questions about anagrams
What is the difference between unscrambling and an anagram?
An anagram uses every letter exactly once. Unscrambling finds any word you can make from some or all of the letters.
Does the original word count as its own anagram?
Not in puzzles, where the aim is a new word. The anagram solver still lists it, so you can see every arrangement at once.
How do I get better at anagrams?
Practise with a few letters a day, learn the common two- and three-letter words, and look for endings first. Timed rounds with friends help too.
Can a blank stand for any letter?
Yes. In games with blanks it can be any letter you choose. In the KitPie Words tools a ? works the same way, and up to 2 are allowed.
What is the longest word I can find?
A result can be as long as the letters you type, and the tools take up to 15 letters. Longer words usually hide behind common endings, so try those first.
Are anagram games good for children?
They are a fun way to practise spelling and words. Start with four or five letters, allow short words, and use the word scrambler to prepare a sheet you can print.
