How to play word games

Most word games ask you to make real words from a set of letters, and KitPie Words helps you practise by listing every word your letters can make, from a list of 173,444 English words.

What is KitPie Words?

KitPie Words is a free set of English word tools and word lists. It is not a game, and it has no accounts and no ads. Every tool searches the same list of 173,444 words, built from the public-domain ENABLE2K list, so a tool never makes up a word.

The guides below explain six popular word games in plain words, with tips, and show which tool helps you practise each one.

How do you use each tool?

Word unscrambler

Type up to 15 letters into the word unscrambler and it lists every word they make, longest first. Add ? for an unknown letter (a blank), up to 2 of them. Try GARDEN?.

Anagram solver

The anagram solver shows only the words that use every letter you typed, then the closest words one letter short. Try STAPLE.

Word finder

The word finder searches by pattern, with ? for each unknown letter, and by first letters, last letters, letters in a row, letters to include or leave out, and length. Each box narrows the list. Try the pattern CRA?E.

Words of one length

Four pages find only words of one length from your letters: 5 letters, 6 letters, 7 letters and 8 letters. Try PLANETS on the 5-letter page.

Word scrambler

The word scrambler shuffles up to 50 words and adds an answer key and a print view, which suits teachers and puzzle makers. Try it with three words.

Word lists

The word lists show complete sets, such as the two-letter words and the five-letter words. A search shows at most 2,000 words at a time.

Which word games do the guides cover?

Questions about KitPie Words

What is KitPie Words?

A free website of English word tools and word lists. It does not host games; it helps you find and check words while you learn or practise.

What does a question mark mean in a search?

A ? stands for one unknown letter, like a blank tile. The unscrambler and the anagram solver accept up to 2; in a word finder pattern each ? fills one position.

How many letters can I enter?

Up to 15 letters in the unscrambler, the anagram solver and the pages for words of one length, and up to 50 words in the scrambler. A result page shows at most 2,000 words.

Which word list do you use?

ENABLE2K, a public-domain list of English words. After a small number of offensive words are removed for display, 173,444 words remain. Read about the word list.

Are all valid game words included?

Not always. ENABLE2K is not the word list of any game, so a word may count in a game and be missing here, or appear here and be refused in a game. Check the rules of the game you play.

Does it work in other languages?

The tools search English words only, whatever the language of the page. The site itself is available in English and in Traditional Chinese.
